As we all know, not only will drinking salt water make person even more dehydrated, enough of it will cause kidney failure and death. So how to filter salt water for drinking?
There are two basic methods to separate salt from water. One is thermal distillation that boiling water turns it into vapor, and leaving the salt behind, and then collects and condense back into water by cooling it down. Another way is reverse osmosis (RO) desalination that uses pressure to force water through filters, straining out other substances at the molecular level.

The problem is that the desalination of water requires a lot of time and energy. Purifying seawater is expensive, especially when compared to tapping regional and local sources of freshwater.

So it is possible for hikers to purify salt water for drinking, but it is not practical.
